Converting video and audio streaming equivalents into official album sales has always been a confusing factor within the industry. However, as of the 1st of February 2016, plays/streams on services such as YouTube, Vevo, Apple Music and Spotify will now count towards The Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) Gold & Platinum Album Awards in the US. This becomes very important as we move further and further into the digital sector within the music industry.
These figures have been carefully analysed and calculated by the RIAA for the decision to introduce a new way for album sales to count towards the Gold and Platinum awards by using the following equation:
1,500 on-demand audio and/or video song streams = 10 track sales = 1 album sale.
Currently, the album awards criteria are calculated as below:
– 500,000 album sales (Gold)
– 1,000,000 album sales (Platinum)
– 2,000,000-plus album sales (multi-Platinum)
